About Us

The French Theater Project is a Boston-based cultural organization created in 2022. Our mission is to spread knowledge of contemporary French theater to audiences in America. We present touring French stage productions in their original versions, with the addition of English and French subtitles. We also organize conversations between American audiences and French writers, designers, actors, and directors speaking about their works and careers; and, we operate the Theater Club at the French Library of Boston.

The Team

David Miller is the founder and general manager of The French Theater Project. He is a life-long lover of theater and a self-taught cultural entrepreneur.

David is an American who learned French in middle- and high-school, then put it aside for 25 years. He resumed his studies in preparation for a three-month professional assignment in Paris in 2013, where he fell in love with French theater. David has continued his French studies for over a decade and has attended more than 75 French theatrical performances. He serves as a Trustee of the French Library of Boston and Cambridge and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Lyric Stage Company of Boston. David was a sponsor of Festival Avignon 2022.

The idea for the French Theater Project was born when David received a gift subscription to L’avant-scène théâtre, a bi-monthly magazine about the contemporary French theater world. During the 2020 Covid pandemic, David began blogging about the plays he read and translating passages into English in order to share the fun with his friends who did not speak French. When Covid subsided, David attended Festival Avignon in 2022 and 2023. The idea to bring some of that joy to America started as a fantasy and matured over months into a concrete plan.
